Feeling crummy? Nasal congestion, runny nose, sore throat, body aches, sneezing, coughing and have a headache? Despite being the middle of July, you are likely suffering from the common cold.
Most commonly, colds are experienced in the fall and winter months, however, they can occur during any time throughout the year including the hot summer months. Colds are caused by a virus (usually rhinovirus). Typically, symptoms last around one week and are classically the worst around days 3-4.
If you find yourself with these symptoms, make sure to drink fluids and get plenty of rest. It is also important to pay extra attention to staying out of the heat to stay hydrated. Common over the counter medications such as decongestants, throat lozenges, and Tylenol or ibuprofen can be taken to help relieve the symptoms. Be sure to follow package instructions and contact a medical provider or pharmacist if you have any questions on which medication to take or if you are taking prescription medications.
As always, it is important to continue to protect yourself from the cold virus. Make sure to wash your hands often with soap and water or an alcohol-based hand sanitizer and avoid touching your eyes, mouth, and nose especially after encountering someone who may be sick.
