Staying Healthy During Holiday Travel

The holidays are upon us and, with that, traveling and being in close quarters is a common occurrence. Below is a quick list of a few helpful travel tips so you can stay healthy and safe this holiday season:

  1. If you have been sick or been in close contact with someone who is sick, consider postponing your trip. You could be contagious before symptoms appear and you may get your extended family sick when you arrive.
  2. Make sure that to bring appropriate clothing and layers for where you are going and how the weather will be when you get back.
  3. Handle your own belongings as much as possible to prevent the spread of germs. Wash your hands often with soap and water. When that is not an option, have hand sanitizer readily available.
  4. Avoid touching your face or eyes. If you must cough or sneeze, do so into a tissue or your sleeve. Others will thank you.
  5. If you are driving, ensure your vehicle is in good working order. Fill your gas tank, check the oil and air up your tires to your car’s recommended amount.
  6. Keep safety supplies in the car in case you get stranded. Have blankets, extra layers, first aid, a flashlight, food, and water just in case.
  7. Avoid distraction- DO NOT text and drive. Give kids in the back seat something to do so they are not distracting you from the road.
  8. Make frequent stops on long trips and hydrate appropriately. Stop and rest if you’re too tired to drive. Plan out your route so that you can stop at a hotel at a decent time before you get too tired.
  9. If you have car trouble, make sure to pull off the road as far as possible to avoid the possibility of being rear-ended by another vehicle going by.

Enjoy this holiday season and remember, “an icy slip can break a hip”.
