How to Protect Yourself from Secondary Infections

Getting a secondary illness after the flu isn’t something we think about very often. Your body (and mind) went through enough with all the nasty symptoms the flu brings to the table. We usually assume we didn’t rest long enough, and the bug is back for round two. Although this can be true, it can also be a sign that the virus checked out, and a bacterial infection is ready to stay awhile.

During the flu, the virus causes damage to the lining of your nasal passages and lungs. This gives bacteria opportunity to introduce a new host of problems. Bacterial pneumonia, sinus infection, and ear infections are the most common. One way to avoid getting sick is to get your flu shot each year. You not only have a better chance at avoiding added sickness, but this can help you avoid the flu altogether or at least lessen your symptoms.

If you think you may have a secondary infection, or you’re just not getting over the flu as fast as you should, make an appointment with your primary care physician or come visit us at one of our urgent care clinics. We have staff available to help you 7 days a week.
