As summer ends and we slide into fall, those dreaded allergies start to appear again for up to 30% of Americans. Commonly known as “Hay Fever”, the fall allergies can be quite miserable for those that fall victim to this ragweed pollen.
There are 17 different species of ragweed and its pollen can be found just about everywhere throughout the United States. Just one plant can release billions of pollen particles over the course of a single season. The ragweed pollen is present in the air from early August until the first hard freeze, so if you go outdoors and have fall allergies, you likely will become a victim to this rag of a weed.
Typical symptoms include: Sneezing, nasal congestion, running nose, puffy, watery & red eyes, itchy throat, and even hives. Persistent exposure and symptoms can lead to sinus problems (sinusitis) and even asthma attacks.
Most people will treat symptoms with over-the-counter antihistamines and decongestants but here are some simple tips to help you survive. Highest pollen counts are typically between 10am – 4 pm, so stay indoors if possible during these times. Keep doors and windows in your house closed. Change your clothes after being outside and take a shower to wash off those pesky pollens. Try nasal irrigation to wash pollens from your nasal cavity.
